Cars, a Waste of Time?

As I was stuck in traffic the other day, moving at a steady 10mph on the highway, I started thinking about how much time we spend in our cars.    I couldn’t put a number on it, but I had a feeling it was probably a lot.  Maybe I had known at some point and blocked it out of my mind because it was so terrifying.  Either way, I was curious and decided to find out, possibly for the second time. I found a few stats on the inter-webs that were all pretty similar, so here it is.  I’ll dish the basics, but here are my favorite two picks if you want to see for yourself.

Drum roll please!   Are you sitting down? The average person spend 4.3 years of their life driving.   In that time, you'll cover enough distance to go to the moon and back, not once but a whole 3 times.  And if that doesn’t blow your mind, 3 months of your life will be spent in traffic; that equates to about 38 hours a year!  It’s too bad that being in the car isn’t the greatest place for multi-tasking because that is a lot of precious time. I know I could really use it.

Is there anything you can do about this?   Well, sort of.   The main thing is planning ahead.  Plan out what you can: your schedule, your menu, your errands, etc.  If you can stay one step ahead of craziness you can shave off a few minutes here and there, and who knows, it might add up to a few important days!   Now that I know how much time we spend in the car, I’m kind of curious to find out how must people entertain themselves.  Hmmmm.  For another day maybe…
